Book Review: Red Rising

Title: Red Rising (Red Rising, #1) Author: Pierce Brown Year of publishing: 2014 Publisher: Del Rey (Random House) Source: I bought this book at a discount price. So I just finished reading author Pierce Brown's debut novel, Red Risin g, and I feel like a bloodydamn fool (that's a term from the book, pun intended) for having committed to this 400 page piece of fiction right in the middle of the super busy exam/holiday season. Yeah, starting such a big project in the midst of all the studying, gift buying, and holiday planning was definitely not one of my smartest moves. I just missed reading books. And I wanted to try something new. Of course, this project would not have felt like a giant waste of time had I finished the book and said to myself " Wow! This is a very good story! It feels so honest and sincere, and I like all of the characters. This book was definitely worth my time! " Yes, that was sarcasm and I'm not making any attempts at being subtle ...

E-book Review: Dawn of Rebellion (Dawn of Rebellion #1)

Title: Dawn of Rebellion (Dawn of Rebellion #1) Author: Michelle Lynn Year of publishing: 2013 Self-published I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion about the book, and the events in it. Teenage sisters Gabby and Dawn live in Great Britain, a country ruled with an iron fist by its government. After their father dies, and their mother abandons them, the girls must fend for themselves..   When Gabby is caught stealing a bracelet for her sister's birthday, she is sent off to the "colonies", a dreaded place from which there is no coming back. Twist: the colonies are built on what used to be the United States of America, and what is now a post-apocalyptic wasteland inhabited by bands of survivors who are trying to make ends meet. Nobody is sure exactly how and why the United States fell apart, but most agree that global warming had a lot to do with it. As Gabby is trying to survive in a new ...

Audiobook Review: Harrison Bergeron, by Kurt Vonnegut

Title: Harrison Bergeron Author: Kurt Vonnegut Jr. Year of publishing: 1961 First published in: The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction Genre: Science fiction, Dystopian Source: Open Culture It is the year 2081. Because of Amendments 211, 212, and 213 to the Constitution, every American is fully equal, meaning that no one is stupider, uglier, weaker, or slower than anyone else. The Handicapper General and a team of agents ensure that the laws of equality are enforced. One April, fourteen-year-old Harrison Bergeron is taken away from his parents, George and Hazel, by the government. What a story this is! Written in short, informative sentences, it puts the reality of this twisted world right in front of you to hear, imagine and be disturbed by. In the distant future, every man and woman in the USA must be equal. Nobody must be smarter, more beautiful or more talented than the next guy. Which means that everybody has to be equally dumb, ugly and socially inept....

Review: The Handmaid's Tale

Title: The Handmaid's Tale Author: Margaret Atwood Year of publishing: 1986 I read: Hardcover edition by Heinemann Library   Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now... The Handmaid's Tale is a disturbing and depressing story about a woman being abused and raped by a totalitarian religious regime. It's full of desperation and despair and the world that ...
