Ten Books That Had Great Impact On Me

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme by That Artsy Reader Girl . First, I want to say that I'm way behind on my X-Files reviews, I've been studying for the big exam this past week, and everything else had to take a back seat (I hate it when that happens!). Also, there are now only two episodes left, and I don't really know how to feel right now #sonotready Now, this week's topic is books that had great impact on us. I feel that this should be an article onto itself, rather than a top ten list. But here's a sample of what books have nurtured my mind and my imagination, so to speak. 1. The Ukrainian and Russian Notebooks: Life and Death under Soviet Rule                                     This was the first graphic novel I had read. Italian artist Igort translated his interviews with people who have survived the Holodomor in Ukraine and the atrocities of the Chechen War in...

Top Ten Tuesday: My Best Books of 2017 + A Poll

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday, an original feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish . This week's topic is ten best books we have read in 2017.  But first, I have something to ask you. A few months ago, I started a new series, called Before They Were Blockbusters , where I review books that became the basis for popular movies. The first book in this series was The Prestige , by Christopher Priest. For my next episode, I've narrowed down the list to two books:  Who Goes There?  by John W. Campbell which was the basis for John Carpenter's The Thing , and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick which was the basis for the movie Blade Runner.   So, go to my Facebook page by clicking on  this link  and vote for the book you want me to review next. The poll will open for six more days.  Now that we have that out of the way, here are the ten best books I have read in 2017 (with links to reviews). 1. Hyperion  ...

The Best of 2017 So Far + Ten Books on My Summer TBR

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the girls of The Broke and the Bookish . This week's topic is ten best books I read in 2017 so far. But, since I only read fourteen books this year so far, and three of them were medical books, my list is going to be a little shorter. And while we're at it, I'm also going to share with you my summer TBR. Best of 2017 so far (in no particular order) 1. D irk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency , by Douglas Adams 2. Hyperion , by Dan Simmons 3. The Fall of Hyperion , by Dan Simmons (review is in the works) 4. The End of Eternity , by Isaac Asimov 5. Bite Me!: An Unofficial Guide to the World of Buffy the Vampire Slaye r, by Nikki Strafford (review will be in the works) 6. The Princess Diarist, by Carrie Fisher Summer of 2017 TBR I highly doubt that I'll read all these books in the two remaining months of summer, but this list is more a of guide than a goal. 1. Three Parts Dead, by Max Gladstone ...

The Best of 2016

Merry Christmas! I hope you're all having a great holiday season. My holiday season consists of long hours spent in my school library, reading up on stuff like oral mucosa, tooth eruption and a cute little germ called S. streptococci. That doesn't mean that I don't get my fair share of Christmas joy. Just last night I watched Home Alone again for the hundredth time and, turns out, I still love it. Despite the fact that this movie is basically torture porn. And now it's time for some annual lists. Some of the best and some of the worst stuff that I read and /or watched this year. We'll start off with the Best list. Now, some of these picks may seem confusing, because they're definitely not from 2016, but I'm listing the best books, movies, and TV-shows that I discovered in 2016. Some of these titles have links to my reviews. You can also check out my list of Top Ten New to Me Authors of 2016 for some of the great books that didn't make the ...

Ten of My Most Recent 5 Star Reads

And it is yet another Top Ten Tuesday! If you don't know what that is, it's a weekly meme hosted by the creative girls behind  The Broke and the Bookish . Every week, you get to post your own top ten list, based on their suggestions. I tend to break that rule sometimes, and come up with my own topics, but for the most part I stay true to the theme.   This week I'm listing ten books I have given a 5 star rating since I started this blog, and even before that. So here they are, in no particular order.      1. The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos , by Brian Greene     2. The Yiddish Policemen's Union , by Michael Chabon     3. Voices from Chernobyl: the Oral History of a Nuclear Disaster , by Svetlana Alexievich     4. The October Country , by Ray Bradbury     5. 1984 , by George Orwell...

Top Ten Best Books I read in 2015

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created and run by the girls of The Broke and the Bookish . Here's the list of ten best books I've read this year.   10. Newburry and Hobbs series, by George Mann     I loved all the books in the series, so it's hard to pick a favourite. Let's just say the man knows how to combine Steampunk tech with exciting and story and memorable characters.   9. Holy Cow , by David Duchovny   Easily one of the funniest and most uplifting books I've read in a while. The idea of a talking cow boarding an air plane risks to be a tad too absurd, but Duchovny's humour makes it work.      8. The Martian , by Andy Weir   'Nuff said.     7.  The Simpsons and their mathematical secrets , by Simon Singh   The Simpsons is my favourite animated show, because it's both funny, witty and full of social commentary. But I didn't kn...
